Leona E. Hawkins (Gelser) “Lee”
Victor, NY
Passed away on October 26, 2023 at age 90. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Daisy Gelser, and siblings Bill (Edna) Gelser, Gladys (Doug) Blakeslee, and Thelma (Charles) Preston.
Lee is survived by her husband of 60 years, David, sons Allen Hawkins and Mark (Mindy) Hawkins; grandchildren Adam and Julia Hawkins; brothers Ira (Nancy) Gelser and James (Pauline) Gelser ; sister – in – laws Mary Phillips and Elsie Graham.
She grew up in Dalton, NY and graduated from Nunda High School (now Keshequa). She graduated from Rochester Business Institute and was an accountant. She then earned degrees from Buffalo State College and Nazareth College.
She was retired from Clifton Springs Central School (now Midlakes) where she taught Home Economics and Reading. She was active in her church and was Secretary of the Boughton Hill Cemetery for many years.
Calling hours will be held Friday November 3rd 4-7 p.m. at Jarmusz Cotton Funeral Home (26 Maple Ave. Victor, NY). Lee’s Funeral Service will be held Saturday November 4th 1 p.m. at Victor United Methodist Church (106 E. Main St. Victor, NY). Interment Boughton Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in her memory.
Leona was an excellent home economics teacher. I had the privilege of being instructed by her in the Clifton Springs school district. Many things she taught me I continue to use in my adulthood. She really made learning a joy for me. I think she chose the correct profession. I am sorry to learn of her passing. Please accept my sincere condolences.
