John Joseph Alger was born June 23,1944 and passed on October 18,2024. John grew up in Binghamton NY, as the middle child of five, two older brothers and two younger sisters.
John was known as the troublemaker of the bunch, paying more attention to pulling pranks and breaking rules rather than academics and good behavior.
He served in the Army as a mechanic.
In1967, he landed a job at Eastman Kodak, he worked there for 31 years.
During the summer of 1968, he would meet the love of his life, Martha Alice Couch, the two eloped 6 months later, in January 27th 1969. Making this year their 55th wedding anniversary. One didn’t go very far without the other.
In May 1970, Daddy’s girl was born, Wanda Marie became the center of his universe. She was his “bud”.
As time flew by he soon took on the role of a proud Grandpa, presenting a whole new adventure, embracing a granddaughter, Jaylyn Anna, and grandson, Jordan Lane. He quickly became a “bus driver”, tea party host, Lego expert and story teller.
Around the same time, he started his second career as a groundskeeper at Victor Hills Golf Course, a job he loved and would enjoy 20 plus years.
I between he enjoyed camping, golfing and most of all Genny Light. Later it was Bingo and Football. Life had its us and downs but with determination and stubborn pride he always prevailed.
He is survived by his wife Martha, daughter Wanda(Jay), granddaughter Jaylyn, grandson Jordan, sister Betty(Tom)Yott. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Saturday October 26th from 4 – 7 p.m. at Jarmusz Cotton Funeral Home (26 Maple Ave. Victor, NY). Interment will be private.
I’ve know John Alger and his entire family almost my whole life. They are indeed like a part of my family. The part about pulling pranks is an absolute fact, as that is how I will always remember John, the practical jocker. His mother and brother Chuck were next door neighbors to my parents for so many years, I just can’t even remember. The family times we have shared with the Alger Family will always be cherished in my heart for eternity. John trust I will always keep in touch with Wanda to make sure she takes good care of Martha, the kids are good, and that she will always and forever have an ear when she needs to talk, a hug when ever she needs it and if she wants to share a Genny Light, I’m her girl. Love you always John, Barb Kuellertz
So very sorry to hear of John’s passing. He will be missed by his family and many others. Many memories were made over the years with John and Martha…too many to list. Rest assured he is being met by Goody and all who went before him. All my love to Martha and Wanda and all the family.
