Augustus “Gus” Pine, 81, born in Fall River, Massachusetts, and formerly of Middletown, passed away peacefully at his home in Victor, NY, on May 15th, 2024. Born on December 14th, 1942, he was the son of the late Augustus Sr. and Bertha (Arsenault) Pine.
He is survived by his wife Gay, former wife Jean, his children Steven (Jill), John (Joanie), Michael (Diane Saez), Jeffery (Kim), Shannon Pooler, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his brothers Henry and Arthur. He is preceded by his sister, Carol (Pine) Hahn.
Gus served in the Army at Fort Stewart, Georgia, where he separated honorably in 1964 to begin his calling as a Middletown Police Officer in 1965. Entering the force as a patrolman, Gus eventually received his Criminal Justice degree in 1974 from Salve Regina College in Newport. He was then promoted to Police Detective and Lieutenant, where he eventually became the Deputy Chief of Police until 1988. Retiring to Sarasota, Florida, Gus eventually moved to Victor, NY, to be closer to family members in his final years.
In days past, Gus could be found frequently sharing a cup of coffee with his father “Gus Sr.” and friends at the Tommy’s Diner in Middletown and more recently enjoying his time with children and grandchildren, an occasional good spin of his favorite local slot machine but, enjoying the time spent with his wife Gay most.
He will be remembered as a silent, tough, but fair man by most and an avid Red Sox fan by all. He will be wholeheartedly missed by many and loved more.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date where family and friends can gather. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, an organization that brings meaning to him.

I worked with Gus in the MPD. He was an excellent police officer and a friendly and good man. I was glad to serve with him and know him. A real “old time cop”
