John H. Gertner passed away on Friday June 26, 2020. He was surrounded by his children and loving wife. Nicknamed “Smiling Jack” he was a joyful and loving man, quick to tell a joke and people gravitated towards his light and friendly personality. Born December 2, 1926, in Rochester NY., Jack graduated from Aquinas Institute, St. Bonaventure University and was a proud World War II Army veteran.
Jack met Margaret Sader while they were both attending St. Bonaventure, to whom he was married for 70 years. He retired as the GM of the Boston Division of Earle M. Jorgensen, to Hudson, FL where he and Margaret lived for 29 years. Jack was an avid golfer and played into his nineties. He sang in the choir at Christ the King Church and with barbershop singing groups and was proud that he coached all four of his sons’ little league teams.
Jack was predeceased by his father Charles, mother Marion and sister Joann Smith. He is survived by his wife Margaret Gertner, brother Charles, (Ann), sister Margaret Mary MacAdam, and his five children; John, (Karen), Kathleen Ryan, (David), Thomas, (Ann), Robert, (Patty), and William, (Katie) as well as twelve grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Donations are being accepted in Jack’s name at the Ontario – Yates Hospice.
